My Painting Materials and Creative Process ／画材と制作プロセス

My paintings are painted on premium European watercolor papers. Italian Fabriano (used by Michelangelo) and French Arches papers are both pure cotton and will not become discolored with time. I use mostly transparent watercolors, and sometimes also make and use colored gouache, using Daniel Smith watercolors. These watercolors are exceptionally fine quality and light-fast; they will keep their original hues throughout time.

Water color pigments are applied on both wet and dry paper, using diverse brushes ranging from California house painting brushes to fine Japanese calligraphy brushes. Natural ocean sponges are also used. By using a variety of brushes and sponges I create variations in line and texture.

I have developed my own painting method which includes submerging each painting in water several times during the process of creation. The submerging in water, and then over glazing with layers of color, gives each painting a feeling of color depth and fluidity.

Each painting begins with a concept, and is allowed to develop a life of its own; blending and balancing control and serendipity, soft and hard, warm and cool, until a sense of wholeness is reached.

ヨーロッパ最高品質のイタリアのファブリアノ社製（ミケランジェロも使っていました）とフランスのアーチス社製の純綿製の水彩用画紙を使用しています。これらの製品は時を経ても変色しません。

主に、透明水彩絵の具を使っておりますが、時折、不透明さを出すために、ダニエル・スミス社の不透明水彩絵の具を使用することもあります。これらの絵の具は特に優れた品質を持ち、光によって色彩が褪せることはありません。

使っている絵筆は、カリフォルニアの塗料用刷毛から日本の書道用の繊細な毛筆まで、実に多様です。また、海綿も使います。乾いた画紙や濡らした画紙に、刷毛や筆や海綿で描く線や感触を変えていきます。

絵を描く上で、私独自に開発した方法を施すこともあります。たとえば、絵を水に幾度も水に浸し、色を幾層にも重ねていきます。そうすることによって、絵に色の深みと流れが生まれます。

どの絵も、ひとつのコンセプトから始まりますが、ゆっくりと自然に発展させる様に制作します。制御と偶然、柔らかさと硬さ、暖かさと冷たさのように対照的なものを融合させバランスを取りながらひとつの作品としてまとめていきます。
